There are a few folky types out there that have this voice.
Never would work for a cover band. I wonder if this is what the death metal singers do after a few years of creating nodules on their vocal chords.

He's actually in a punk band called Hot Water Music
and this is a solo project.
The guys playing are all in the Revival Tour which is a live show well worth going to.
