I'm not saying I agree with the logic, but I'm saying that's what the logic might be. I'm guessing that he's actually from a Mexican background. If a white guy in a workplace does an Indian accent, it would be pretty unnacceptable, but if an Indian person quoted something their mother had said with an Indian accent, it would be viewed in a very different way.
