news/links seems to disappear when you click back to "web" from "news" when searching for anything
Try the same when searching for "test" - news "disappears" but is still available in the "more" sub menu
But the rest of your post still stands, very very odd

Yeah, I take that bit back...
now I've done some other searches, I found "news" disappears if there would otherwise only be a few links, or even if you search for "cheese". It seems to have a mind of its own.
