the rest is painfully bad. At least 4chan has funny memes, reddit memes are the shittest thing to ever grace the internet.

Reddit's problem is its default subreddits are poorly chosen
So it appears exactly as you describe if you don't have an account because you only ever see the default front page.
If you create an account you can remove the default subreddits from the front page and you only get the content from subreddits you subscribe to.
