Or should we not award anything to anyone on the grounds that they might be a secret paedo?

"Knighthoods and OBEs and the like are a bit of old bollocks"

In my mind, accepting a knighthood is essentially accepting that you are subservient to a family of scumbag dictators who are kept in charge by sectarian laws .It is something that I disagree with.

In that you can vote not to have them. It's just that an overwhelming majority don't want that. But point taken.
Bet you'd take one if they offered it though.

None of the big three are because they know they'd wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting into power.

If you want to abolish the monarchy you can vote for them.
If enough people do then the monarchy gets abolished.
It's quite a good system isn't it?

And hopefully in the United Republic we'd retain some form of honours system recognizing high achievers and the unaknowledged deserving.

Republic or monarchy, you'd still be able to function under the radar.

the assumtion that I'd accept an honour from an institution that I despise and want disbanded is a tad bizarre
. Let me know when the next "vote them out" thing is going on and I'll get down the polling station and vote for getting rid of the cunts.

"famous philanthropist".
The "famous" bit implies that they are very vocal about giving money to charity and are very keen to be called a "philanthropist". He hardly gave so much money that it effected his life as many people do. Likewise, Sir Bono.
Some people having honours seems to devalue the honours of people who deserve them. Lots seem gained because of fame, or because of political support.
