This is a link post Disabling of Java is advised
I wouldn't want anyone to catch a nasty bug now

This is a normal post The trouble with disabling/removing Java is so much stuff runs on it that
a lot of non-tech people will whine that "the internet isn't working". It's fine for them in the know, but just try explaining this to the people who are end users who aren't tech aware. Cue raised eyebrows and bored expressions.

Good linkage though, and I'm now java free.

This is a normal post A good point...
...though I find myself rarely using Java anywhere on the interwebz these days. Fair point that less techie people may get confused and start mashing keys, grunting, and eventually urinate over their desktops in frustration because their chat room broke. Rather that than some nasty 0-day virus eating your PC alive...

This is a normal post Hardly anything runs on Java
You're thinking of JavaScript (no relation)

And disabling Java isn't an option. Oracle need to pull their finger out and fix it.

This is a normal post it's JDK 7 though
I can't see many large organisatuons using 7 fully yet. So is downgrading to 6 a valid option?

Minecraft doesn't work on Linux with JDK 7 anyway.

This is a normal post Is it confirmed 6 is safe though?
I can't seem to find anything anywhere.

This is a normal post Old versions don't have this vulnerability,
but they're not patched any more so not safe either.

This is a normal post Official advice is to go with JDK 6 until this is sorted.

This is a normal post I thought we were talking about "non-tech people"
If it's a business app, then it's the responsibility of the IT department

Is this vulnerability just in the browser?
(, Wed 29 Aug 2012, 11:03, , Reply)
This is a normal post Browsers are the main point of attack
by the looks of it, but the vulnerability is with Java itself. I think you can add restrictions in the security controls though...

This is a normal post disabling java is a bit extreme
just tell it to get out of town and never come back

This is a normal post I've been Java free at home for well over a year.
I got infected via a Java exploit embedded within an advert on a trusted website (don't know which as I had several tabs open as always at the time). Took me the thick end of a week to fully eradicate the bastard thing. Java had been silently failing to update for a couple of revisions so the hole was well known by this point.

I'm sure it has its uses, but I genuinely haven't missed it. I strongly recommend you uninstall it and see if you do.

This is a normal post is uninstalling
the same as telling safari not to use it?
(, Wed 29 Aug 2012, 11:52, , Reply)
This is a normal post I expect so
But why would you want to have a known security risk laying around if it's not in use? If you just disable it you leave yourself open to something or someone reenabling it without your knowledge.

This is a normal post I think Windows 7 and the newest OSX
no longer ship with Java anyway due to it's problems. Most people with a newish PC / MAC may not even have it installed. Even so, it's just a quick trip to the control panel to rid yourself of it.

so I wonder how much I can fuck up my rig by doing this - don't need java in my browser though...
