An academic paper detailing how the stuff you print out (on colour laser printers) can be tracked back to that printer....

This was known about in the 90's
Inkjets do it too.
IIRC it was brought about as an anti-forgery device.
Same with your scanner, try using it to scan a bank note....

Wasn't there a father and son team looking into this a few years ago?
Theres a set of unexplained micro dots printed on every sheet,unique to each printer .

Old news...
Everyone knows you should always print your ransom notes on someone else's printer. Or just photocopy them.
This is just a step up on how they used to match a typed page to a specific typewriter due to the various nicks and damage in the characters on the page.
