Maybe something like chicken juice spilled in it and festered.
That stuff attracts vermin and is generally retch-inducing when it's warmed up.

Perhaps it was smelling a bit rank and they like things to smell fresh clean
(I had to clean out our drain over christmas as it got blocked and the overflowing water was creating an ice-rink on the patio due to freezing conditions - man did that smell
