Still, can't argue with getting a replacement machine in such circumstances.
and similarly, I got a replacement hard drive from seagate in the same way.
edit: but that was in warranty, so it's not the same thing, so forget everything I said.

I was gobsmacked.
I don't know if I caught one of their reps on a really good day or what, but straight after the initial phone conversation (where I said it was second hand - no bullshitting on my part, they just took the serial number and ID'd it from that) they emailed me a prepaid postage voucher to send it to them, and within 3 days I had a phone call from them saying "it's an old machine, we generally don't bother repairing them, so there's a new unit on its way to you".
Total down-time 7 days, total effort on my part - finding a cardboard box and a bunch of bubblewrap to pack it in. First rate.
