Apparently it's by way of being an in-joke among the movie sound community...Clearly there are a few (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) where it's practically mandatory to include a Wilhelm, but there are others where it seems a bit more under the radar, similar to how a graphic designer* might try and sneak a goatse or something similarly meme-worthy into a branding project.
Either way it's fun.
