# I've seen people mention her (and superman) a lot, is it meant to be an insult?
perhaps pick a character that isn't in the top 10 greatest family film roles ever?

# Who, Yondu Udonta?
(, Tue 16 Jan 2018, 17:03, archived)
# I had to google that, is that one because she was going to turn blue?

# Last Jedi was way better than the last one, but two scenes really spoil it.
1. Where Leia suddenly becomes all 'I can do magic, me'.
2. It would have been way, way more impressive if Luke had turned up, got shot to f*ck, then all the time he was bragging about coming back as a ghost and not leaving any footprints he already was a ghost. Instead he's all 'Ah fooled you, I was sat on this rock all the time. I'm safe. Nothing to worry about. Might as well die though anyway. LoL'.
(, Tue 16 Jan 2018, 17:17, archived)
# Or it was brilliant because
it finally revealed that Leia can use the force (and to such a level that she can dodge death)
I'm not following what you disliked about Luke's bit. I assumed he died from the enormous strain of doing space magic stuff, not that he just died for lols
(, Tue 16 Jan 2018, 17:28, archived)
# Maybe he was some sort of bi-solar vampire.
His last thought was 'two suns - ah shit'. *POOF*

# I like this

# Really? I assumed Luke died because Hamill didn't want to do any more films.
What you should really be asking yourself, though, is why all that dakka didn't make so much as a dent in the ground...

The bit with Leia was just silly, hence my little outburst.

# Totally agree.
You've got an actor who is still alive, and a dead actress, so why kill off the alive actor's character and keep alive the dead actress's character?

Dumb!

# So Leia should have fought Kylo with a lightsabre
and Luke should have been blown in to space but survived? Not quite sure how they'd shoehorn that in to the otherwise finished film

Edit - hold on, are you saying they knew Carrie Fisher was going to die in advance? If that's true then yeah, ok, I agree they probably should have had Leia die on screen
(, Tue 16 Jan 2018, 17:34, archived)
# She did die on screen, she got blasted into space
They could've cut the bit where she comes back, and edited her out of the rest of the film.

Maybe shot some kind of memorial ceremony for at the end.

Luke could have just not died, then joined up with the rebels physically in episode 9.

I reckon that would all have been doable.

# Silly Star Wars for not rewriting and reshooting 75% of the film
and throwing away Carrie Fisher's last role
(, Tue 16 Jan 2018, 22:36, archived)
# They did it with Kevin Spasey...
(, Tue 16 Jan 2018, 23:38, archived)
# they didn't kill Kevin Spacey's characters off though, just swapped his face.
Killing Leia would have meant rewriting three quarters of the film, getting all the other actors back in (if they weren't off shooting other films already) reshooting, restarting the fx work and ditching Carrie Fishers last work.

I think they made the right choice, let JJ Abrams work out how to deal with it. It's only a kids film, just say she went back to wherever Mary Poppins comes from.
(, Wed 17 Jan 2018, 7:44, archived)
# I think 75% is a bit of an exaggeration
(, Wed 17 Jan 2018, 9:36, archived)
# And I think "a bit of" is a gross understatement.
(, Wed 17 Jan 2018, 10:51, archived)
# I think it might be my fault.
When I was watching the film we'd all had a bit of a skinful and when that part of the film happened I might have shouted out the line from Guardians 2. It wasn't packed and it did get a laugh so I'm not too cut up over it.

I referred to that scene as the Mary Poppins bit on /links just so as not to spoil it for anyone else.

If you still don't get it, Leia struck the same pose as the blue guy did when he was doing his Mary Poppins bit.
(, Tue 16 Jan 2018, 22:06, archived)
# I thought she did more of a superman/DaVinci god pose?
(, Tue 16 Jan 2018, 22:38, archived)
# She might have, but at the time the sheer absurdity of it made me think of Guardians.
(, Wed 17 Jan 2018, 3:16, archived)
# I love that that's the thing people got hung up on
and not the Rebels simply flying away in a straight line for half the film because the Empire couldn't overtake or call for backup to head them off for some unknown reason.
(, Wed 17 Jan 2018, 9:06, archived)
# Presumably for the same reason the original death star couldn't hyperspace around Yavin in A New Hope.
I blame the midichlorians
(, Wed 17 Jan 2018, 9:47, archived)
# I don't think the death star could do hyperspace at all
But all the new order lot definitely could
(, Wed 17 Jan 2018, 9:51, archived)
# I think it would have to
otherwise it would take hundreds of thousands of years to get anywhere
(, Wed 17 Jan 2018, 10:15, archived)
# According to the Internet it does do hyperspace
Perhaps they had a trainee working it that day who dropped out too soon/the wrong side of the planet
(, Wed 17 Jan 2018, 13:56, archived)
# I don't think we should really look too deeply into such things
That way madness lies!
