# That is nonsense
The Americans broke the code surely?!?!?!
(, Tue 31 May 2005, 12:45, archived)
# yes.
and won the war. singlehandedly. personally.
(, Tue 31 May 2005, 15:47, archived)
# AFAIK
the Polish people actually broke the engima code..
They've probably stolen teh German coding machine, cause I cant find any other explanation of how could have they haxx0red the damn thing.
(, Tue 31 May 2005, 18:05, archived)
# my understanding...
...is that the Poles did most of the groundwork, including obtaining info on the machine from Germans as well as reverse engineering an encoding unit (the three wheeled one), and then the Bletchley lot refined all that and cracked the algorithm wide open, and also automated the procedures so messages could be read in a timely manner rather than weeks later.
(, Tue 31 May 2005, 19:19, archived)
# also
the first captured working enigma machine was captured from a german u-boat which surrendered to a british destroyer after being depth-charged, which combined with the information from the poles meant the bletchely park lot put everything together and cracked the algorithm.
The story was then anally raped by the yanks and turned into "U-571" whereby lots of action was involved on the americans behalf to capture it, rather than the much less thrilling real life *splash* *bang* *surface* "Ve surrender".
(, Wed 1 Jun 2005, 1:01, archived)
# I think the Poles
simply stole an Enigma machine, which they then passed on to the Brits. Should I be a further spoilsport by pointing out that the Enigma operator appears to be wearing a German uniform? Nah, I wouldn't dare!
(, Wed 1 Jun 2005, 0:10, archived)
# ^ see a bove
the poles stole information but i think the only example of the machine itself was captured from a u-boat.
(, Wed 1 Jun 2005, 1:13, archived)
# apparently
there were no u-boats involved, that some kid found it, off the northumberland coast
