Trust me,
I looked awfully closely, and still think that there is space wasted on the right. I think this is a deliberate device so that people can read all the writing where it would otherwise be obscured by the author's hand.
Whereas artistic license is necessary and sometimes even admired, the thought of all that virgin writing space gives me the same tense feeling that I get when I see a large, deep layer of snow that has not yet been stomped all over.

His pondering over the exact word to describe Michael Jackson resulting in at least one rejected word (possibly two) before he decides that he might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb IS a deliberate device so that people can read all the writing.
