# very
one of these days programmers will stop giving programs stupid "funny" recursive names ("let's call it the gimp snort snort giggle"; losers) and then people might even begin using linux.

be prepared for hours of frustration with the gimp's terrible design, i warn you... better than paint though.

# this^
gimp took me a while to get my head around

# I think they've generally stopped doing that now
because they want to be taken more seriously.
However, there are still a couple of legacy acronyms around.

Try using Gimpshop on windows; its a version where the layout has been improved.

# thank the lord for that

# The GIMP
is very good. A lot of work has gone into the functionality. But the layout of menus is a bit annoying.
The next release should be smashing; it fixes the layout and has some funky new features.

There's something called Krita (http://www.koffice.org/krita/) for KDE. I've never used it though, so I can't say if it's any good.

# to clarify my dislike of the gimp
it seems that it can do anything i want, but finding out how to make it actually *do* that is akin to beating my testicles with a sledgehammer. if they can deal with the menus, toolbars and layouts then i'd be perfectly happy with it, i look forward to the nexxt release...

and i'll check out krita, cheers
