I think it's a dominant/recessive (pick the one I mean please) allele in his genetics but it skipped him or something.

If I remember rightly,
the Dad might have one ginger gene, and another hair colour gene dominating over it, so it doesn't show. But if that ginger gene is the one to be passed on, and the kid gets one from the mum too, then it's doomed.
