I know of the manufacturer and think they make decent stuff but I guess it's all about what you are prepared to pay for portability.
I think the price per gig is way too steep personally. You can get a 750gb external drive for that and granted it's the size of a hefty book and weighs a lot more but it will go in a briefcase or a manbag no problem.
I'm pretty sure Freecom do a 320gb pocket for about £60.
I'd suggest he searches the web for reviews about durability because most of these won't take being dropped a lot.

if he can live without sticking it in his pocket then I can recommend this. I have 4 of them and 3 of the previous 320gb models ( which I pad about a fiver more than the current 500gb price just over 12 months ago )

got a seagate freeagent sitting on my desk as a paperweight

was broken out of the box, but cos i moved from uni back home and then had a load of more important shit happening over the summer i never got it replaced. might try and get it replaced (still within guarentee period) and then flog the new one on ebay
