When I graduated in '77 punch cards were still expected to be used for at least 10 more years.We had an industrial design project to improve the punch card reader, a prize was offered by a local manufacturer (fishing for cheap design ideas, I think.)
When I worked in a Silicon Valley design consulting office (after graduation) I had a lot of projects with computer peripherals that would be obsolete in months after they were made - difficult to keep ahead of the game!
