I made me a little spaceman lamp
I command you to adore him.
I'm trying to get some moneys in the attempt to make a whole production line. If you'd like to help out I'm rewarding every backer with fabulous prizes. bit.ly/kickstarterspaceman

In turn
I adore your animations. When will we see a full length movie starring cats of questionable intent?

Unsure. Their site is a bit unclear and I can't figure out if they're currently still judging or if they've decided or what's up. I came in 11th out of 700 entries much thanks to b3ta and it's denizens.
I've applied to a bunch of different funding sources but have nothing solid yet. I suppose if all else fails I can go back to being a productive member of society. It's been a nice reprieve sitting in my workshop inventing things, tho.

I hope you wear a white lab coat and cackle a lot and such forth.
I would.

I more often wear an apron, tho I've ruined a good few outfits lately going without. Gosh, I just realized that I'll have to get a job fairly soon to continue making things. Bah. Any ideas where an inventor/hacker/maker/geek can go for decent employment these days? Is the Manhattan Project still hiring?

okay now I've had a look at the link
what's the retail price likely to be?
if one donates $250, will that include shipping and handling of said lamp?
and how much do I have to give you to shave your neck?

I've gotten in touch with some select art collections and shops and retail will probably go for $300 there. I might produce my own limited editions with special colors and hand painting at that same price or perhaps less.
If you donate $250 to the cause I will ship your completely free lamp anywhere for no additional cost.
No one controls the neckbeard! It's who I am, man. It's my identity.

Thank you much. I've improved the design a bit and might be selling a few to fans.

Don't you know that incandescant lights are the spawn of satan?
Are not you going to be environmentally responsible and use the mercury-filled fluorescent plastic-framed globes instead?
( ,

But surely one must rape the globe in some way to harvest even the twinkling environmental magic of ecofriendly fairylights. I fully intend to provide the light myself. I will make it out of my own sense of self satisfaction, pour it into jars, and provide it to people to spread on their lamps as they see fit.

The method's actually not too hard. All you really need is the bulb housing, some tin foil, clay, a chisel, a file, and an oven. I made some progress shots of the whole thing going together here www.flickr.com/photos/gianteye/sets/72157622545785329/

I made a desklamp too
tribs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/images/b3ta/Cybarbie/usb_barbie_desklamp.htm
LED based.
Sadly, apparently a cat ate it. Or at least ripped its head off.
So... would investors get a share of the profits of this venture?
Additional question : Will the final product have the option of a lamp shade? Incandescent bulbs get very hot and aren't comfy to look at directly.

You're not investing.
You're donating. So no, no profits. All rewards for your donations are listed clearly on the page.

Cute Barbie lamp. I can see why a cat would seek to destroy it, though. It does have a similar brand of evil to the one cats contain.
Unfortunately I'm not taking investments, just donations. I have a hard enough time managing projects and making my own money back. I'm trying to entice people into donating with gifts that hopefully are about equivalent to the money they give with the time and effort and art I put into them. Still, it's all out of the goodness of your heart.
I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with the final product. I'm tempted just to go with the bare Edison bulb, which is bright enough to provide useful light but is still beautiful and comfortable to look at.

Completely off the subject
But how did you get to work with NASA? And what were you doing? Its just that its always been a dream of mine to work with NASA in an engineering job, wondering what I would need to get the chance. Thanks in advance :)

They actually came to my school and picked some industrial design students to work with them on blue sky ideas for incremental lunar habitation. It lasted a few months and then they set us free. I suspect, in retrospect, that it was all simply an advertising campaign to show off how forward thinking and innovative they were to use ideas from enthusiastic young designers or some such.
It was pretty frustrating trying to pry reasonable information out of the engineers that dealt with us directly. We'd ask questions like "what's the internal structure of a prospective fuel tank like? could the tank, after getting voided on landing, be used as a storage tank for grey water or is it unworkable." We'd tend to get brushed off with questions like these. It was a might tedious.
I know some JPL engineers at Ames. It seems like they got their jobs through social connections. I'd recommend joining groups like Dorkbot and Battlebots. I'd also visit conferences like DefCon and be a part of hackerspaces like Noisebridge. They're good places to meet up with exciting engineers some of whom might be or be friends with NASA people and offer a leg up. It's also a good idea to make projects that nerds find captivating and insinuate that you're looking for work with NASA along with the project. Spacebridge is kinda a good example www.youtube.com/watch?v=go56JzqoFK0

Though I think 3d printing is mighty cool a model this size would probably cost a couple thousand dollars to print. That and I'd have to find a way to digitize the design either scanning it or sculpting the model digitally myself first. I'd be perfectly willing to print one if someone gave me a whole pile of cash to do so, tho.
I do 3d printing fairly often and though it's coming down in price pretty steadily and coming up in quality even faster it's still not too practical for production lines, especially that the material is never all too strong when it comes out.
I think my lamp's been posted across a few blogs. I know it's been on Make and Craft as well as some design zines.
