There are 3 plots that I know of:Cinematic release: Weakest of the three, let down by special effects in places, still a very enjoyable and atmospheric film
DvD alternate ending: Changes more than just the ending. I prefer it to the cinematic release but it's still not best.
Book: Enormously different storyline* and setting, far more bleak, justifies the title and is by far the best story of the three (IMO).
If you've seen the film, read the book. If you've not seen the film, read the book.
*sample of degree of different-ness: the infected can talk, and they know where he lives from the outset.
