Awww...Definitely the right thing :)
My cat does the opposite - he's a big ol' tomcat and one night was making a helluva noise wanting out.
"Hmm," I thought "Must be some nasty cat about he wants to chase off." and so I let him out.
Imagine my surprise (and this is 100% true), when he ran down the garden, up onto the wall, where about 4 cats were sitting waiting for him. They all jumped down and went off.
