Has the brightly coloured and extensive olympic coverage by the media
turned it into nothing more than a worldwide edition of X-Factor? Ooh, you can run fast Johnny...go and win Mummy one of those gold thingies.

i'm all for it,
stop the fuckers from smashing up cars for a few years.
(, Wed 8 Aug 2012, 13:55, Reply)
Indeed
But those predisposed towards car smashing will do it anyway, sports or not. They've got dozens of other sports they could focus on (that are covered on tv all year round) and it hasn't worked so far.
(, Wed 8 Aug 2012, 13:57, Reply)
Perhaps we could make car smashing into a sport?

Instead of Gold Medals we can hand out stereos.

I thought last year's riots were more interesting to watch.

The Olympics is great
People getting together in a series of non-violent internation competitions, and the world's greatest atheletes get to show off their stuff on the greatest stage of them all.
But it's just games innit.

you seem to be covering all the angles here, KP.

God, it's nice to have a normal conversation with someone on here

i think there will inevitably be people who lose out from having unattainable dreams,
but even if a small percentage go on to be fitter, and more succesful, then it's a good thing. I reckon the positives outweigh the negatives.
(, Wed 8 Aug 2012, 14:00, Reply)
Totally agree
I don't think there are any negatives really...But there are parents out there that will say 'fuck it, why should my kid focus on their studies when they can run around after a football instead?'
There are plenty of these sort of people out there. Then the country will be saturated by sports obsessed youngsters that can barely read.

MARK MY WORDS WINDY! MARK THEM!

I just don't have the faith that our younger generation will be able to keep it in perspective
but good luck to all of them that can

Contrast the attitude of our highly paid footballers
storming off cos he missed a penalty.
Some athletes missed gold by much smaller margins, they didn't publicly display such petulance.
(, Wed 8 Aug 2012, 14:02, Reply)
Yep, I can't tar everyone with the same brush
But use sport as something to fall back on, surely? Get an education, then pursue sports when you can afford to live off of it.
