Revenant.
Standing on the edge of the Fourth, Taksina could still feel the pain. The rain lashed her face as she recalled the supercilious face of the midwife as she was told “He isn’t yours. Your kind cannot keep babies tested positive.”

The lightning screamed through her nerves as the thunder echoed the hollow boom of her heart as it called for her lost child.. Five long years to the day she had immersed herself in her work. Now her current investigation was coming to a close. Shutting her eyes she could see the heads of the victims. Every one the same. A grey red mess surrounding the neatly removed skulltop, the brain resembling a neural smoothie. Who or what was doing this? Eradicating the top tier of the judicial system in such a messy manner did not fit the profile of any criminals she had investigated. Psychic criminals were always difficult but being a Yanisha helped. If they couldn’t hear your mind they couldn’t hear you coming. And they couldn’t lie.

Her latest enquiry was following a tip-off. A very good one from a reliable source, a Yanisha fallen into bad ways (if his addiction to openeye was bad). It helped that they were also expensive ways, money is a good key and it cost a lot for a Yanisha to become psychic, even for just an hour. She’d often thought about being normal, to be as psychic as everyone else. It was while he was under the pseudo trance of openeye that Alkesh had seen the murderer and the room he would be in, as well as the body stretched out on the floor. A very famous body. The particular strain of openeye he had taken was a version known as 26forward, a single day precog drug. It had given Taksina 26 hours to find the singularity and stake it out. She had seen the gravcar stop and the two men enter the building. There could be no mistaking the bright-red, short-cropped hair of the Chief of Justices.

Walking swiftly down from the roof she stopped at the turn in the stairs that led to the Judge’s penthouse. If Alkesh was accurate then she had 35 minutes before the man would become the body. She heard them enter and counted the seconds as the door closed. Approaching the door carefully Taksina removed the RAM from her pocket and took her neutraliser from it’s holster. The RAM clicked into place against the lock and there was a dull scream as it forced the door open against it’s will. Taksina ran softly into the room and took in the scene around her. She was too late for the judge; Alkesh wasn’t so accurate after all. She stared in horror at the man facing her. “Jenser! But you’re dead!” The apparition stared at her with ill-concealed glee.

“No, not Jenser but I’m sure he would have made a wonderful father. Hello mother. Time for you to die.”

Clicks hard
I'm loving this. Not sure why, but it reminds me of Philip K. Dick a lot.

Yeah.
PKD is a very heavy influence (touches of Dredd and Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series too). Very Bladerunner type scenes in my mind.

Ahh good,
wasn't sure of why I instantly thought PKD, but I think it's the noirish quality that stands out for me :)

Nicely done
