As it ended the programme's run (at the time), not only would you have little introduction to the premise or characters, but by that point it had fallen into the trap many popular comedies do, becoming too 'soapy', as I usually refer to it (too caught up in the development of the characters over what made the show initially interesting), cf. The Royle Family, Only Fools and Horses...
