people were taught to type...

The home keys were the keys that your fingers were on when 'at rest'.

You spent hours typing thing like 'sad dad fad gag jaf kal...' without looking.

Everything you typed was outputted on a piece of 'paper' that was printed as you typed.
You had no delete, no Control-Z, not even a monitor. You couldn't even read what you had just written until the line was finished...

At which point, your left hand rose up & moved a lever that pushed the 'printer' back to the right.

You had to push the keys in an inch or so as well...
