# I think he should have clarified that more.....
...But essentially everything he said was factually correct:

Q: Do some Islamic sects employ the use of suicide bombers?
A: Yes

Q: Do some Arab countries meet out amputation as a punishment?
A: Yes

Q: Are Arab women treated as an underclass under holy law?
A: Yes (compare male and female punishment for adultery)

Don't get me wrong. I lived in the middle east for years and likes it alot there. Smashing people and very little crime.

# Exactly. What was printed was a sweeping
generalisation that covered all Arabs. It made no distinction that it was talking about some Arab states. Maybe that is some sleight-of-hand editing by the Express, but he is still responsible if his by-line is on it.

I agree with you that many Arab states are oppressive and have appaling human rights but I think the point is that that isn't what the article said.

# No No No!
After you submit copy the sub editor cuts it into whatever shape he wants. You don't get to review it until it's in print! If his original piece said something different to the published version how the hell's he supposed to do anything about it? His byline is not where the buck stops.

# I can't believe he doesn't have
editorial approval.

Well actually, I can believe it coz they've fucked around with his copy, but he should have got it. Look what's happened now.

# He has editorial approval, but not control.
He submits copy, the sub edits it, the magazine publishes it. If the meaning of the copy changes between him filing it with the sub and it appearing in print it's nothing to do with him.
