# MIND!

# Heheheheheh
Though I think he had a fair point.....
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 11:32, archived)
# probably
and this pic was a spur of the moment thing, he has he own opinions
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 11:33, archived)
# And he should atleast be allowed to voice his own opinion.
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 11:33, archived)
# Ahhh, but it's the same as most things these days
It's not up to courts or people who might actually be offended to decide what's offensive, it's up the the tabloids...
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 11:35, archived)
# Indeed.
And people being offended on behalf of others.

Besides, he said that some islamic states harbour terrorists. They do. He said that some islamic states cut off limbs as punishment. They do; it's part of sharia law. He said that some islamic states repress women. They do.

The real problem is that a lot of british muslim leaders resemble victims looking for a crime. They should grow the fuck up.

# head, on the & nail
are words that spring to mind, although not necessarily in that order
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 11:51, archived)
# and he does :D
just that most people are never going to agree with anyones opinions, he just voiced them in the wrong place =/

# Should have been in The Mail
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 11:48, archived)
# What he seems to be saying now is
somewhat more reasonable - that some Arab states are oppressive etc etc. But the article in the Express didn't say that, it said all Arabs are like that.
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 11:40, archived)
# I think he should have clarified that more.....
...But essentially everything he said was factually correct:

Q: Do some Islamic sects employ the use of suicide bombers?
A: Yes

Q: Do some Arab countries meet out amputation as a punishment?
A: Yes

Q: Are Arab women treated as an underclass under holy law?
A: Yes (compare male and female punishment for adultery)

Don't get me wrong. I lived in the middle east for years and likes it alot there. Smashing people and very little crime.
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 11:44, archived)
# Exactly. What was printed was a sweeping
generalisation that covered all Arabs. It made no distinction that it was talking about some Arab states. Maybe that is some sleight-of-hand editing by the Express, but he is still responsible if his by-line is on it.

I agree with you that many Arab states are oppressive and have appaling human rights but I think the point is that that isn't what the article said.
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 11:50, archived)
# No No No!
After you submit copy the sub editor cuts it into whatever shape he wants. You don't get to review it until it's in print! If his original piece said something different to the published version how the hell's he supposed to do anything about it? His byline is not where the buck stops.
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 12:01, archived)
# I can't believe he doesn't have
editorial approval.

Well actually, I can believe it coz they've fucked around with his copy, but he should have got it. Look what's happened now.
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 12:12, archived)
# He has editorial approval, but not control.
He submits copy, the sub edits it, the magazine publishes it. If the meaning of the copy changes between him filing it with the sub and it appearing in print it's nothing to do with him.
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 12:24, archived)
# *cough*ahem*
Mete out amputation....

/PEDANT
(, Mon 12 Jan 2004, 12:26, archived)
# Apparently
It was a reprint of an article he had published before that was edited, but not by him, and the problem arose from the way it was edited. Personally, I think he's great.
