Glitter fled to Cambodia, supposedly the world's child sex tourism capital, after he was released from prison, and the Cambodian authorities deported him because he was seen as bad for the country's image after a new Prime Minister decided to clean up Cambodia's image...

BTW, Blue Peter did an appeal in about 1985 all about the famine/war in Cambodia - I'm sure if someone can rustle up a picture, that'd be a great tattyshop!
