If these fail, you could
get hold of a CD of Debian, which on booting form the CD has a host of cross-platform setup options for the state you want your hdd to be in. It sounds a bit drastic, but you get to apply many options non-destructively....
There are loads of Debian images all over the place, you can Google them, but they are quite big.
