never used them though, and they are demos, so i don't know how many features are available, so thats probably no good

If these fail, you could
get hold of a CD of Debian, which on booting form the CD has a host of cross-platform setup options for the state you want your hdd to be in. It sounds a bit drastic, but you get to apply many options non-destructively....
There are loads of Debian images all over the place, you can Google them, but they are quite big.
...sorry - Debian is an open unix/linux release.

basically i got asked to install AOL Broadband, and its done something to the partition and wont boot

does the BIOS still see the drive ?
installing software DOES NOT cause drives to die.
it's either:
a: a rare (but not unheard of) bootsector virus thats overwriten the MBR
b: hardware failure
if a: you should be able to get the data back, if b: then you have a new paperweight.

I had *this much*
bother both installing AND removing the AOL virus from several people's machines. It truly is the spawn of santa!
AOHell does such evil things to the registry you wouldn't believe until you try and deleting it manually......
