# i think it varies
depending on where in the world you are...

in the UK it's pronounced bee-tah
in north america it seems to be pronounced bay-tah

# nope
lets have none of that.

beeeta it is, and I think it might be nice if Amerib3tans called it that in honour of its specialness
(not that my opinion counts for anything)

*edit/ and Canab3tans as well

# Out of curiosity
What Americans have you met that pronounced it bay-tah? Northerners?
(, Thu 22 Apr 2004, 4:06, archived)
# I pronounce it bay-tuh
as in "beta testing"
and I'm from the mid-atlantic

# smae with me
except i pronounce b3ta so as to rhyme with peter, like the fak.

# oi you!
don't go giving us mid-atlantic-ers a bad pronunciation name. I always say "bee-ta".
and besides, "bay-tans" just sounds much weirder than "bee-tans"

# I'm stodgily set in my ways :)
I know "bee-ta" is correct, but I just can't reconcile it with "beta" as in "beta carotine" or "beta testing"

# All
I'm American,I say Bay-tah and so does every American I've ever spoken to. I only heard bee-tah from a recent British transplant. DO you say Katherine ZEE-tah Jones?
(, Thu 22 Apr 2004, 5:26, archived)
# they do
though greeks say 'eee' whenever feasible.

I've been trained to say beetah now, though I'll probably be looked at funny
