on the water, near structures or sensitive shores, there are signs that say "no wake" - which means "don't be makin' no waves here"
Source photo - in this photo, you see, there is a channel marker that probably has some tide/flow tracking equipment and they want to minimize waves by passing vessels.
a wake, is also a funeral term where people get together to mourn the dead.
