well...in general gif is a good format for "cartoons" - or at least images with lots of big surfaces of the same colour or animations, and jpg is good for photos.
BMP is just crap because the file-size is enormous - you could have made that image over there about 3 Kb as a JPG, and probably about 20 if you made it 4 times as wide/heigh.
The FAQ does still say something about large file-sizes, right?
