if you're using photoshopselect your layer, and then either use the brush tool (set to clear) to smooth the edges as much as you like, or create a mask for the layer and do pretty much the same thing (with a normal brush).

I'm using fireworks...but I think I can do it. I've been using the eraser tool and got it ok. but I mean... his ostrich has hair for god's sake.

I use fireworks as wellUse the feather marquee option, or just make sure the feathering is very high on the eraser tool.
Do you ever try masking areas? I like it because you can re-edit to your heart's content. It does take more time than any of the selection tools, though.

You can do a rough lassoo/clipping mask andthen go round the hair/fur/whatever with an eraser set at 50% opacity or something, or you could just use feathering.
The thing is, the whole diffusion effect with fur is impossible to cut out; you have to re-create the effect with the available tools.

feathering is the big secret to better photoshopping......and erasers are far more useful than paint brushes.
