# ha!
i'm doing just that... my parents keep asking me when i'm going to get a "real" job, despite the fact i'm a part-time lecturer...

# "real" jobs are overrated.
PhDs are far more fun.

# aye, i've been paid to go and get pissed
in 4 countries this year alone...

i mean, paid to go and attend a conference
(, Sun 10 Jul 2005, 17:10, archived)
# That's a pretty impressive conference rate.
I've only had one overseas trip (Canary Islands) in the past 12 months, but I still fondly remember one 2 month work trip that took in Chile, Sydney and Hawaii about half way through my PhD.

# nice
i was a student volunteer at two though
i'm not sure i could manage four publications a year!

how did you get the chile/sydney/hawaii gig?
(, Sun 10 Jul 2005, 17:29, archived)
# It was a combination of things that just came together at the right time.
A trip to install and use a new instrument at a telescope in the Chilean Andes (I'm an astronomer), then on to Sydney for a week of meetings with my collaborators based there, then a conference in Hawaii.

# impressivo!

# I was rather chuffed.
I was mightily sick of hanging round airports waiting for flights, airline food, and being cramped in tiny airline seats for 12 hours at a time though.
(, Sun 10 Jul 2005, 17:45, archived)
# PhD's are not fun.
(, Sun 10 Jul 2005, 17:10, archived)
# that's cos you're like
all chemisty, or something
if you did an easy subject, the PhD might be fun

# For Crikey's Sake...
Set phasers to stun.

Is this not the same b3ta board that, just 5 mins ago, hosted a thread about scrounging chav scum not working?

And now the participants of that thread are bragging about spunking tax payer's hard earned away on beer and chips down the senior common room?

You should be ashamed of your double standards.

Mind you, I wish I thought of doing a PhD instead of going off into the world to get fucked by The Man.

If I had my time again.....

But I enjoyed mine, mostly.
