Seems to me it would be trivalto write a program that captures a video as it's being played on another media player, and saves the result without rights protection. Not sure how DRM is supposed to survive that.

indeed.the thing is the bbc are working on their own video codec, Dirak, which is also open source. It is interesting to see how this pans out.
