The M&Ms are in special colours. Dark colours, mostly.

it looks like HP, but isn't at all tart of vinegary like a brown sauce. You could probably get a similar effect by mixing tomato sauce with a bit of soy and perhaps some Worcestershire sauce. There are carrots and all sort of veggies on the bottle, but as my Japanese isn't too hot, I can't read the ingredients.
