'Where can I find source images to play with?
The web is full of photos just waiting for you to play with them. The best place to start is a Google Image Search, but there are lots of photo sites out there, including:

Getty Images
Pbase
Morguefile'

PLEASE REMOVE OUR NAME FROM YOUR WEBPAGE IMMEDIATELY.
We also hereby officially wish to warn you that if we ever come across unauthorised use of our imagery on your site, we will take action in order to protect our copyright.

# what do they mean by posting on the website
here in Britain linking to copyrighted work is not illegal, hosting it is though.

well it was last time i checked, thats why torrent site tend to stay alive.

# that's not very nice.
they should be overjoyed that we make their dull images at least a bit interesting.
and it's an arse to remove the tag so at least their name stays on them.

edit/ pass the details of zoo magazine onto her they must have stolen one of her stolen images.

# To sound like a scratched record
If, and I'm not suggestion out of the b3ta purse, that we start a b3ta one. Everyone post is done on the understanding that anyone can use the image for noncommercial and commercial perposes. But only if they have been put on the approval list.

This includes regular contributors and members that have posted on b3ta for more that 3 months and have a steady posting record.

I even volenteer to watch the whole thing as I currently work a 90 hour week in front of a PC.
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:40, archived)
# hmmmm, but who would be in charge of 'vetting' said images
otherwise everyone could just contribute any ol' google image saying it was copyright free, and 'someone' would have to check out every single image, which would involve a LOT of time and effort...

seems a lot of effort for ensuring all source images are copyright free
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:42, archived)
# and the people taking the nice photos
wouldn't want any old tosspot and Zoo magazine nicking them.
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:44, archived)
# yeah, just seems a lot of effort on keeping on top of it
and supposing somedid did use said copyright free image, and suddenly had the opportunity to make a bit of money from their creation with the image, you just KNOW the source image taker/contributor is gonna get pissed
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:45, archived)
# Exactly
Too much effort for too little effectiveness.

A better thing would be to make a thing which searches the internet for copyright-free pics. Or somethjing
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:45, archived)
# Done on a ratio basis?
Time over posts.

If you give loads of photos then you get access as well.

Membership on the condition that you are legally liable if you post images that are not yours.

After all the internet is about freedom.
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:45, archived)
# thing is, surely access would be better off being for all,
otherwise it becomes very 'two tier' on b3ta with those that can afford nice shiny cameras to take a few pics of trees/flowers/anything out the window, just to get access to the big shiny good source pics?
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:47, archived)
# best not to worry about it too much
just look sheepish say your sorry and promise not to nick images again.
then offer tea and biscuits.
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:53, archived)
# OK what about for all
a quantifier that it can't be use directly by large media companies, unless it has been shopped and full rights have been given to the individual?
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:53, archived)
# It's not a bad idea in principle, just be a huge amount of effort to run it reasonably smoothly
after all, it's not like getty is used HUGELY on the board, mainly for small anims etc.
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:56, archived)
# I like this idea
I don't understand how the ownership works, I've seen pics on videos on Getty Images which are available on other sites too.
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:34, archived)

The watermarked images are available for free to the general public.

If you can drag an image or animation without indulging in any hackery, then it's got to be fair game.

Perhaps the Electronic Frontier Foundation should be consulted?
(, Fri 2 Mar 2007, 20:58, archived)
# Hmmm
It may be a small issue, but I don't see where you're recommending that anyone should steal anything. In fact, I thought you were recommending purchasing images from Getty Images.
Perhaps if you made your intention clearer by stating, "Getty Images, who have a fine selection of images for sale ;)".

Or is there part of the copyright law that allows you to parody copyrighted material? Even ripping copyrighted material purely for parody's sake? I thought this was allowed, and that's basically what b3ta does, parody getty's et al's images, along with the creative shit as well!?!
