I was brieflyperplexed by the disparity between the british "asian" (i.e. indo-pakistani descent) and the american "asian" (oriental). I asked my sister's american flatmate what she would mean if she described someone as "asian" and she got on a high horse and said she never would because that's labelling someone with something they can't control and that I was a racist for saying anything like it.
I asked her how she'd describe someone's apparent ethnic origin to the police in the event that she got mugged.
Her reply?
"If he robbed me then he's probably black."
I love my own double standards but I do not respect them in others.
