# does anyone think this would be hard to make?
negativland.com/audiogadgets.html#howto

I think im going to try it.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:25, archived)
# well, no
fairly simple stuff but....

being as the instructions are american, and old you may have problems getting the bits.

(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:28, archived)
# i am american.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:29, archived)
# one problem down, two to go.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:31, archived)
# Is 1998 all that old?

Should still be do-able.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:31, archived)
# possibly, but 9 years is a long time in electronics
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:33, archived)
# sure is.
just had a thought.
back in '89 when i started university, the most powerful computer on the campus had 88mb of memory, and was the size of a caravan.

18 years later and i've got 16gig on my keyring.
(that makes Johnny Mnemonic look pretty fucking stupid too doesn't it?)
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:36, archived)
# yep
my mates new PC has 2TB storage ( 4 X 500Gb sata raid thingy)

2 X 768Mb 7800GTX Sli graphics cards (I think thats the model number)

4 Gb ram (as yet, 4Gb seems to be the maximum)

Blueray drive + DVD Ram drive and all the other usual bits.

and I was in his place yesterday and he was playing tetris on it.

(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:41, archived)
# I still remember when 32MB RAM cost £500
and that wasn't all that long ago.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:43, archived)
# indeed not.
I bought a 56k modem, and it cost me £95

I now have 15 of them in the workshop that nobody wants.

(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:44, archived)
# !
I need a Rockwell chipset external modem, as mine died. Are they available to outsiders?
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:49, archived)
# all the modems I have are internal
both ISA and PCI

(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:50, archived)
# doh!
no use - it's for my router mainly, and my old Acorn Risc PC :-)
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:51, archived)
# I'll keep my eyes open
the external ones do show up from time to time.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:52, archived)
# i wish i still had my cluster of Acorn R140 machines.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:54, archived)
# I have an A3010 and RPC
The A3010 can get internet access via a 38K serial link to the RPC :-)

I still use the RPC for IRC access, as it has the best IRC client ever written.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:59, archived)
# i bow down before your collection of out-dated tat!
at one time i had a cellar full of old stuff, all working, including:

Cifer Megaframe
Honeywell Bull XPS 100
4 x Acorn R140 RiscOS machines
DECStation 5100 (Ultrix)
VAXStation 3100 (Ultrix)
and a ruck of 386 boxen running linux

they were either junked, sold off or given away.

our leccy bill was fucking huge

(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 3:09, archived)
# doh!
Did you know RISC OS is still going? It's on version 5 or so now, in a PC called Iyonix, running on an Intel XScale CPU. If they weren't Apple Mac rip-off prices, I'd have one (£2000+).
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 3:11, archived)
# really? i thought it would be long dead by now
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 3:20, archived)
# Yep, still alive.
There's even a virtual RiscPC software for windows, but I've not used that.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 3:23, archived)
# oh bobbins
i've just spent 2 weeks trying to track down a couple of dirt cheap ones to install into a machine at work.

just so i can dial in to a geographic number when i'm on the road, and connect to the net through the works broadband, rather than call an 0845 number which isn't counted in the inclusive minutes on the mobile.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:50, archived)
# This is what I want to do with my home broadband
as my router supports dial-in.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:53, archived)
# sadly our router doesn't
so it has to be bodged the old fashioned way.

# Circuit bend them all into a minimodular synth rack.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:50, archived)
# tried that
ran out of patch leads
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:51, archived)
# does anyone know where some good circuit bending instuctions are?
I wanted to try that, too.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:52, archived)
# Matrix Synth has links and showcases new ideas.
Flap back thru pastposts for more ideas and links.

# you think it would be hard to do with no knowledge of them?
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:56, archived)
# Only a few initial things to get down.
Locating the key parts to fuck with is actually
quite simple. Most toys are built on simple
boards and even if the chips have ben goo'd
it's easy to find the places to put knobs in,
hook in audio out(/in if it had mic) taps, etc.
Cheap hobby if you yardsale or junkshop.

# at least it wasn't solitaire.

a co-worker just spent 600 notes on a very posh laptop. and all he does is play sol and winmine on it.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:46, archived)
# the only reason he was not playing solitaire, was because
i uninstalled all the windows games when i set up the system.
he found the tetris game himself.

(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:48, archived)
# yeah
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:37, archived)
# although, using older more primative technology does however force you to be a little more creative.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:44, archived)
# That's what she said
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:40, archived)
# Yes...
but if you don't make it, and one for me, i may unleash that grandma on you. I'll tell her you took her Woman's Weekly, so god help me.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:28, archived)
# seems fairly easy.
but then i do have 1/4 of an elecronic engineering degree.

don't mess it up, or you'll really piss off your phone company, as it isn't approved for use and could theoretically cause damage damage the exchange.

but this is unlikely.

(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:30, archived)
# ahhahah! Even better!
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:31, archived)
# really, i'd go a different route completely.
got some software somewhere that allows you to do pretty much the same thing using a pc & modem.

i'll try to find it.
(, Wed 25 Jul 2007, 2:33, archived)

Btw James, check out the Movement for Finance image i did. It may not make much sense here....I'll post it anyway.

# hummus = creative ability
as in "Can you fucking hummus?"

I think it originated with Lumpbucket..
