I just learned the basics of the pen tool so now i could do a little shopping. I just have to come up with better ideas..... and keep practicing.

1. get the hang of layers
2. ditto opacity
3. 1px feather
4. smudge tool

= fine and dandy :)

I stayed away from the pen tool and masks for about 3 years, attempting to do everything with the lasso tool and eraser. The pen tool and masks are your friends..
