Hmm. That really does sound quite lame.
Maybe the punchline is a stock Chinese phrase with an extra level of meaning, like giraffe jokes where the punchline involves "pain in the neck".

They explained it to me, the joke is that the panda is white (so not well) and has black eyes (so isn't sleeping).
I don't think there were any double meanings involved, heheh.
