Seriously though, most slides will come apart to get at the film by itself. They should scan better if they are flat against the scanner bed.

They're kind of old now, you might be able to pick one up cheap on ebay.
Alternatively, you could try projecting them onto a surface and photographing that... might be interesting actually, but probably useless if you're looking for the best reproduction quality.

You can just display the slides on a screen and takes a digital picture of the screen.

You may need to change some settings on your camera to get the photos right, but after some trial and error I got useable results. They got very useable after some 'shopping.

Also, be sure to set up your camera on a tripod front and center of the screen. Then you don't have to 'shop too much to make your pics look okay.
