Shower head is still the best way
When I lectured live sound it was one of the first thing I told my classes how to do. When people start learning audio the tend to want to clean their ears out better. I knew a couple who had to leave the course due to ear damage.

my hearing is sporked on the right side, virtually no high frequencies at all... doesn't stop me recording and mixing stuff...

Clubbing? The the hair receptors in the aural canal that deal with HF go first.
I do know a guitarist that has exactly the same problem in his left ear. Amazingly enough in the last year of so it has started to come back a bit.
You do lose HFs anyway. The audable range for humans is said to be 20Hz to 20kHz but that is based on a child's hearing. Most people have problems hearing things above 19kHz.

The right side was always dodgy from when I was little, then not helped by being in ridiculously loud bands from 16-26 (now).
On the right side I can get 14kHz if I REALLY concentrate, generally not much abouve 11 though...
