# very good first post
you're going to hull

a little over 50kb mind, best to watch that.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:45, archived)
# haha
fucking hell 4kb :)
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:52, archived)
# it doesn't bother me much but if this was day shift he'd get eaten
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:54, archived)
# I reckon they need someone in there to diffuse it.
It's all gotten a little too intense if they're shouting over 4kb.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:56, archived)
# i think i'm going to start putting every post at 51kb just to see what happens
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:58, archived)
# they've shouted at 51
some poor bastard got picked on for file size (Lplater, first post was about 200kb) and the nazis just kept shouting him off the board.

Someone to diffuse it...you mean like a mod?
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:59, archived)
# No I mean like
er... a diffuser.
Actually I mean someone who's established and respected here to just be a calming voice. Or maybe a bunch of people. My observation is that the board reacts pretty quickly to a change in temperature like that, it can become funny instead of angry, a bit lighter-hearted about the whole thing.
It's funny: there are at least 2 mods I can think of who are much more lenient about file sizes than the majority of users.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:12, archived)
# yeah I try to be humourous and fluffy when it comes to someone abusing a noob etc
Then someone like prodigy69 or DTH etc gets on my case...

and yeah, Bob is pretty easy going with a lot of stuff. Even when I felt it necessary to whine my guts out about nsfw posts.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:22, archived)
# Haha DTH?
The man's practically a board saint. I can't imagine him getting on anyone's case.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:24, archived)
# he got on mine when i said a 60kb image wasn't to bad
i got this long sob story about capped/dialup speeds
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:25, archived)
# This is a genuine argument
for some. Lovely people like Flowerpot in South Africa have archaic broadband caps and it's ( in my opinion of course ) a courtesy to thumbnail all your images and give the viewer a choice to then open up the big picture.
It drives me nuts because it takes very little effort to do and would end all conflict over what is acceptable.
For a self-confessed cunt I'm quite aware of what I put online for others to view. Some of my stuff is massive and I have to cap it to 400kb just to get it on Cr3 hosting. I have recent images near 6MB but a quick thumb to bigger sorts it out.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:33, archived)
# I know it's a genuine argument
but the point that I don't understand is when people are happy with a 49kB image that with some optimisation could be 10kB and rant about a 60kB image and say: that's 10kB oversize.

My caps pretty harsh as well, I get 3 gig (between 3 people) a month and capped to fuck if we use more...
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:39, archived)
# Fucking hell
I used over 2 gig YESTERDAY. I can't see a single legitimate reason for capping. What am I missing? Is there a limited about of internet available in the UK or something? Also I don't know why UK consumers put up with it.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:47, archived)
# im way down in the backwaters of aus
with tight arsed parents.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:56, archived)
# Right.
I honestly don't get it though. Why do ISPs cap the speed? What is the advantage to them to do so?
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:58, archived)
# they can squeeze more customers in
in the assumption that most people don't have their theoretical capacity running 24/7

so you can download your 3 emails each day at 8mb/s

and do nothing else that day!

that's called "anytime use" I think

and yes, it is yet another scam

(see my earlier posts for more whining on this subject)
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 5:02, archived)
# It's not like that
broadband, whatever the delivery is a pipe. A bit like water. there is only so much you can squeeze down the pipe at any one time and greed has over subscribed it. cable is the worst because they won't hit max in my lifetime and greed is making them find ways to maximise income. Copper DSL is fucked because they sold that shit when BT could barely manage the domestic phone data.
The law on selling and what you can say has just changed and also they ( the ISPs ) have been asked to stop selling BB on speeds they can never reach ( not obligatory ) but it will allow you to get out of a contract as most were mis-sold.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 5:12, archived)
# it's exactly like that, they have basically sold capacity that doesn't exist
that's why they have the capping for the folk that use "too much", they just oversold it

most private individuals don't use their connection to whatever it's capability is unless they are p2p'ing continually

if the newspeak on the adverts has been killed then it's a start
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 5:20, archived)
# we have different perspectives on this
as we have different systems. It is true for you ( your argument ) but not for me. I saw internal memos that stated NTL had the data capability and infrastructure to supply every hooked up subscriber with a minimum of 30MB BB before the merger with Telewest. As I said above, they will never reach capacity in my lifetime ( due to dark fibre installations ) but they will take my money for the highest speed yet give me the lowest speed they can get away with the moment I choose to use it. I was shifting 5GB a day with NTL, since the merger and rebrand I can't do that a week.

I have to go to bed and am lighting my last fag. It's been good chatting with you. Now fuck off.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 5:32, archived)
# haha
fuck off!

:D

the funny thing about computing infrastructure is that to double it sometimes all it takes is an engineer to come out and press a button, this is after a huge invoice got paid.

it's all a load of crap with the little peons paying
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 5:36, archived)
# to make people pay more for faster internet
pure and simple. they get people on the el cheapo plan. that's really fast, they download alot and then find themselves capped for 20 days of the month. So the isp offers them the medium priced plan and the cycle continues.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 5:02, archived)
# because charging money for things that don't exist
is the uk way

come on man, you know that :)
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:59, archived)
# I'm pretty lax over it
but if an image is over 100kb I will point it out. I'd like Bob to acknowledge that his 'plucked from the air' recommendation was at a time when a lot of people were still on dial-up and should now be altered but at the end of the day i'm an ex Staff-Sergeant and a little brainwashed when it comes to rules. ( there can never be guidelines, only rules )
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:47, archived)
# They are all little twats
with little hitler complexes who thing they can pick up on one piece of information and pretend they are mods or somehow important in the scheme of anything because they've no talent nor nothing better to do than get a little bonk on over bitching about someones filesize, infact I'm convinced they check the filesize before even looking at the picture.

Sack of cunts.

It wasn't like this in my day.

*wanders off to find slippers*
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:01, archived)
# I do if the pic is taking a month to load because it is half a meg
and I check the filesize of "first post be gentle" to warn people...

# I take issue with many people
over their postings on b3ta. I don't think I'm a nazi or a noob basher. I'm equally as scathing with noobs and those I know are mods. I'm a bit of a faq hag but only because I think it's not hard to be courteous as a poster ( especially as given the b3ta hosting you need never post a too-large file again ).
I also think I do give helpful advice to those who genuinely make mistakes and are not aware of how to correct them with the tools they have.
I am a right cunt with those who are obviously trolling for bite.

Not my job as you point out but then again it's all our jobs to get b3ta fluffy for us all.

never argue with a troll man NEVER EVER EVER. It's slagging of a griefer in a game. you're giving them the attention and amusement they want.

If my wife would actually come home and live with me like a proper fucking woman I might go to bed at night and be less argumentative.

# It's pretty easy to draw outlines
I just wish I could colour it, because my efforts so far have ruined the image.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:25, archived)
# I once saw a book "how to draw anime"
from the images inside the correct title was "How to draw shit zero budget 1970's american cartoons"

it really was dire

tho to be honest I should learn to draw properly before picking up on a style really, if you can't do the basics can't do cack all ultimately
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:27, archived)
# I have this
graphics.smithmicro.com/go/mangastudio
and it was the biggest waste of money ever. All it does is allow you to quickly draw 'speed' and 'motion' lines in your comic frames. I'm sure it is of use to those who are taking the piss out of teenagers with the same old shite ( same people making squirrel with tits crap ) but I certainly think it is crap for the casual illustrator.
( thanks for the recommendation, I have a punch for that guy )

when i explained it my housemate damn near choked on the sandwich he was eating and had to be beaten quite hard on the back to dislodge lumps of bread from his lungs. i don't think i've ever seen anyone laughing so hard whilst nearly killing themsleves

welcome, chair kitten etc.

Re: the filesize, people get really unhappy if they exceed the magical 50kb limit, and will shout at you. Try and keep the filesize as small as possible for everyone to be happy.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:47, archived)
# ah fuck those guys!
fuck them!

but yeah.. they will squeak

no doubt everyone's broadband will get shittingly capped before long so it can be an issue sometimes, but meh, we're all doomed anyway
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:49, archived)
# everyones getting capped?
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:51, archived)
# I'm capped now.
I have 20MB broadband but the minute I choose to use it they cap me to 4MB for 5 hours. I can't wait until they up me to 50MB so they can cap me even quicker.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:53, archived)

# it's going up to
50MB this year and the consensus is that we will have 100MB within 18 months. Which is nice, I was paying £1000 a month for that 5 years ago.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:01, archived)
# I doubt my line will even support that :)
barely supports voice calls
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:02, archived)
# It's
cable, fibre to the home. Not copper ADSL.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:04, archived)
# heh, it's not just that I have a copper line
I think it was installed by monkeys round about the neolithic age

but then bt is so bloody dacs happy it goes a long way to explaining things like picking up the receiver to make a phone call and hearing some poor bastard berate bt staff about the quality of the phone service

tho there is some high speed copper thing but I can't remember the details of it
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:12, archived)
# that's just crap, innit
it seems they are good at selling services but they simply have no intention of actually giving what is sold, redefining the meaning of words to remind the customers of their place is going to be the result

and have you seen the alleged broadband for mobile devices.. the pricing structures take the piss

and if you even get the top tier consumer ones you still get sod all transfer a month

I have no idea at what point you start getting completely unfucked service, but I doubt it'll be anything less than 5 figures a month
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:00, archived)
# My 02
contract was costing me £75 a month because of my handset but it did not take them long to tell me I no longer qualified for my 'unlimited' data quota. A few hours on b3ta can mean I pay extra for my tariff.
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:04, archived)
# this is there way
and i just remembered the philipines free texting fuckup as well

some carrier introduced a new service with completely free texting and they went mental, sending millions of texts a day, they shitcanned the lot and changed it to "encourage responsible texting" what a load of crap

I'm surprised that things like skype are even allowed to exist, cable and wireless had voip made illegal in some carribean islands a while back because it dared to compete their complete monopoly on phone calls

I know it all costs money to run this stuff but it really does take the piss the way these companies sell something they simply don't have and then call the customers stupid for abusing the service by actually using it.

and yeah, I wouldn't expect 75 a month to be anything near unlimited for a mobile, add a few 0's onto the end and see at which point it can actually happen, no doubt a lot more than it would be personally worth for the convenience of it, and they'll still no doubt have a limit on it even then
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 4:10, archived)
# I wouldn't be surprised
my isp doesn't cap me "officially"

but they no longer offer the package I have to new customers (ie: specifically sold as uncapped)

and no doubt they reserve the right to take the piss

the problem is that so many people are getting broadband because it's been oversold as "use any time" (not actually meaning 'use any time', fucking neospeak) and people are using it 'any time'

so it's all turning to shit and they aren't making enough cash out of the idiots

who knows what's going to happen man, the major infrastructure is only going to get upgraded when it's close to the squeak of death and I can't imagine that'll be a cheap experience for anyone
(, Sat 7 Jun 2008, 3:54, archived)
