Gazas current situation came about because of an over-reaction by the Israeli government to Hamas achieving decent results at the polls (in fact, they should currently represent the palestinian people).
Admittedly, it would have been brave for Israel to ignore the situation. But OTOH, it had been one of the more stable situations in recent years, and isn't it possible that Hamas could have been brought round through political means rather than the current mess?
