Palestine was simply a Western name on old maps. They also used the words "The Holy Land", but if you are inventing a nationality HolyLanders sounds a bit wierd...so they called themselves "Palestinians".

Why did they invent this word? Because with 96% of the land already being given to Arabs, Arabs pleading for the last 4% wasn't gonna get much sympathy.

Hence the invention of "The Palestinians" and the myth of "Palestine"as a real country.

As for their homes - well I'm sure that Bosnians, Serbs and Croatians fled warzones and lost land. Jews were kicked out of their homes across the Middle East.

Gazas current situation came about because of an over-reaction by the Israeli government to Hamas achieving decent results at the polls (in fact, they should currently represent the palestinian people).

Admittedly, it would have been brave for Israel to ignore the situation. But OTOH, it had been one of the more stable situations in recent years, and isn't it possible that Hamas could have been brought round through political means rather than the current mess?

The state is not the people. For instance, the Palestinian state is opposed to suicide bombings - does that mean that the suicide bombers are okay? No.
