Useful one to know is if you're using tattyshop you can click on the little eye icon on the head layer in the layer list it will disappear. You can then select the area round the hood and collar. If you then press crtl I you invert the selection and can click on the layer list so that the head appears again.
If you then press delete the head will fit nice and snugly into the robe.

# even better is instead of pressing delete, click on the mask icon
has the same effect but you can then alter the mask to get the edges juuust right :)
