But the occasional joke about "stopping working on bosonic string theory and moving into heterotic string theory", or comments about research being killed because the string landscape contains 10^500 vacua, or about research being killed because the author didn't consider including Lorentz invariance, are cringe-worthy.
Still, it's clear that they actually listened to their physics advisor. And probably studied him, giggled, and then just wrote about him.
