# The 50mm
Without a shadow of a doubt. I've got one and it is absolutely bloody marvelous.

# Ah - now. That's the sort of response I was after.
Have you tried long shots with the 50mm? If so, how have they turned out?

# To be honest I haven't tried that
I've been mainly using the impressive depth of field on targets within a couple of metres. Those have come out brilliantly. I'm not really sure why you'd use it on long shots either - it is much more of a portrait lens.

Which 75-300 are you looking at, because I've got the Mk1 75-300 IS and I'm planning to get rid of it because it can't properly focus at 300mm and the image stabiliser is broken.

# I find amazon reviews very helpful for these

As per mine they seem to be saying it is soft at full extension, but there seems to be no way round that without paying four figure sums, and frankly you'll probably be fine as long as you don't blow the images up too large.

Assuming you've only got the kit 35-70 lens then get the zoom. You'll probably find more uses for it than the 50mm - I got that as my third lens.
