As Brian Sewell once commented, 'The 'Monkey Beer' portrait is considered one of Van Bijlert's finest. Note his use of bright colours, the feathered hat, the wry smile upon the man's face as if to say 'This is a beer, it is mine, and I quite enjoy it.' Truly magnificent.'
